Card Lands Four in NCAA Singles Draw


STANFORD, Calif. – Four Stanford men’s tennis student-athletes have been selected for the NCAA singles tournament, while two will compete in both singles and doubles. Arthur Fery and Nishesh Basavareddy will play in both events, while Max Basing and Samir Banerjee were chosen in singles.

Fery is the No. 3 national seed in singles, earning the distinction after a 15-4 spring season all at the No. 1 singles position. The Wimbledon, England native has nine wins this season over ranked opponents, including three against the other top eight seeds.

Basavareddy holds a 22-7 record, led by a dynamic fall that included a victory at the ITA Fall National Championship. Basavareddy was the fourth Stanford athlete to win the tournament and the first freshman since 2011. The Carmel, Indiana native holds 11 wins this season over ranked opponents, and will be seeded No. 9-16.

Basing has been ranked as high as No. 4 nationally this season, and he enters the NCAA Tournament slotted at No. 27. The Oxshott, England native is 16-7 this season with eight wins over ranked opponents and a semifinal appearance at the ITA All-American Championships in September.

Banerjee has tallied a 14-6 record as a freshman including a 13-4 dual mark. Hailing from Basking Ridge, N.J., he has been ranked as high as No. 49 this season and is currently No. 56. Banerjee has spent the dual season largely at No. 2 and No. 3 singles, and he has six wins over ranked opposition.

The pair of Fery and Basavareddy are currently ranked as the No. 20 tandem nationally, entering the NCAA doubles bracket with a 5-3 record. The duo picked up its top win over the sixth-ranked pair nationally at the ITA Indoor National Championships.

The singles and doubles competition will be conducted May 22-27 at the USTA National Campus in Orlando, Florida, after the conclusion of the team championship, which runs from May 18-20.
