San Diego product Haley Giavara and the Bears beat SDSU in the teams’ last meeting in 2022.
BERKELEY – The California women’s tennis team returns to action when the Golden Bears host San Diego State on Friday at 1:30 p.m. at the Hellman Tennis Complex.
Cal brings a 2-3 record into the nonconference match with 4-2 SDSU.

Ivanov Clinches 2022 Win Over SDSU
In Cal’s last meeting with SDSU, on Feb. 20, 2022, Valentina Ivanov clinched a 5-2 victory over the Aztecs. She defeated Nnena Nadozie, 6-2, 6-2, at court-three singles to wrap up the win.
Cal also won the doubles point. The pair of Jessica Alsola and Hannah Viller Moeller beat SDSU’s Regina Pitts and Cécile Morin on court three and the Bears’ Erin Richardson and Julia Rosenqvist clinched the point with a 7-6(7) win over Nadozie and Alicia Melosch on court two.
Bears Fall To Canes, Pack In Miami
Cal last competed on Feb. 12, when the Bears lost, 4-0, to No. 10 North Carolina State, one day after falling to No. 16 Miami, 5-2. Miami hosted both nonconference matches at its Neil Schiff Tennis Center.
Poll Position
In the Tuesday ITA Coaches Poll, Cal is ranked 66th. In Tuesday’s ITA singles poll, Jessica Alsola (14-3 record) is ranked 36th and Katja Wiersholm (7-4) is ranked 122nd. The duo of Alsola and Katja Wiersholm (12-7) is ranked No. 16 in doubles.
Scouting the Bears
- Cal has an all-time record of 44-7 vs. SDSU, including last year’s meeting (see above)
- Hannah Viller Moeller clinched both of Cal’s victories so far, including the 6-1 win over UC Santa Barbara on Jan. 21 and the 4-1 win over Princeton in the ITA Kickoff Weekend on Jan. 27 in Berkeley
- Haley Giavara ended fall 2022 in France, where the Cal senior and Team USA won the Master’U BNP Paribas Championship, with Cal head coach Amanda Augustus on the U.S. staff
- Sophomores Jessica Alsola and Katja Wiersholm were outstanding in the fall, as the duo won the ITA Northwest Regional Championships and reached the consolation doubles final at the ITA National Fall Championships
