Cal Team Season Ends Against USD

AUSTIN, Texas – The 28th-ranked California women’s tennis team lost to 34th-ranked San Diego, 4-1, in the NCAA Championship first round on Friday to end the Golden Bears’ run in the team tournament. Hannah Viller Moeller won in singles for Cal at the Texas Tennis Center.
 
The Bears also got a doubles win from their court-one tandem of seniors Haley Giavara and Valentina Ivanov, who defeated the 80th-ranked Solymar Colling and Kailey Evans, 6-3. But the Toreros won on court three and clinched the doubles point with a victory on court two to take a 1-0 lead.
 
In singles, the 103rd-ranked Giavara fell to Claudia De Las Heras on court two, 6-3, 6-1, to give USD a 2-0 lead.
 
Viller Moeller followed with a 7-5, 6-4 victory over the 70th-ranked Evans on court six to make the score 2-1.
 
On court one, Cal’s 55th-ranked Jessica Alsola lost for just the fifth time this season in a 6-3, 2-6, 6-3 result against the 98th-ranked Colling. The Bears trailed 3-1.
 
With Cal battling in three-setters on courts three and four, Berta Passola Folch fell to the Toreros’ Jordyn McBride, 2-6, 6-4, 7-5, on court five to complete the Bears’ 4-1 loss and move USD (13-10) into the second round.
 
Friday’s result also ended the college tennis careers of Cal seniors Giavara and Erin Richardson.
 
The Bears conclude the dual-match portion of the season with a 12-10 record and now look forward to the individual postseason tournaments. Alsola is set to play in the NCAA Singles Championship and the sophomore pair of Alsola and Katja Wiersholm is slated to compete in the NCAA Doubles Championship from May 22-27 in Orlando, Florida.
