Cal senior Carl Emil Overbeck began his ITA regional singles campaign with a straight-set win Friday in Seattle.
SEATTLE – The California men’s tennis team began play in the singles and doubles main draws at the ITA Northwest Regional Championships on Friday, with the Golden Bears posting seven wins in 10 matches at the Nordstrom Tennis Center.
The Cal pair of Jonathan Irwanto and Bernardo Munk Mesa defeated Liam Carpenter and Thibaud Maxant of Saint Mary’s 8-4 in the doubles round of 64, while four other Bear duos had first-round byes.
Cal’s singles results included wins by seeded Bears Theo Dean, the 44th-ranked second seed who beat Oregon’s Paris Pouatcha 6-4, 6-2; third-seeded and 56th-ranked Carl Emil Overbeck, who defeated Oregon’s Lachlan Roberton 6-2, 6-2; 123rd-ranked Alex Chang, the eighth seed who knocked off Gonzaga’s Giovanni Branchetti 7-5, 6-1; and Nos. 9-16 seed Derrick Chen, who bested Portland State’s Hubert Theriault 6-3, 6-0. Additionally, Cal’s Alex Aney moved past Rithvik Katpelly of UC Davis 6-2, 6-4 and Cal’s Ethan Schiffman beat Oregon’s Cooper Errey 6-3, 6-4.
The ITA Northwest Regional Championships continue Saturday with matches starting at 8 a.m. PT.
