Cal sophomore Jonathan Irwanto split his singles matches Saturday in Thousand Oaks.
TULSA, Okla. – The California men’s tennis team began play in the ITA All-American Championships on Saturday, with Derrick Chen winning but Timofey Stepanov losing in pre-qualifying singles at the Case Tennis Center at the University of Tulsa.
Chen, a junior, defeated Duke’s Saahith Jayaraman 4-6, 7-6(1), 6-3 in the opening round of 128. He advances to play Ohio State’s fourth-seeded and 113th-ranked Bryce Nakashima on Sunday at 6 a.m. PT.
Stepanov, a sophomore, fell to Oklahoma’s Oscar Lacides 6-3, 6-2.
Pre-qualifying singles and doubles matches end Sunday, with qualifying matches beginning Monday and the main draws starting Wednesday. The ITA All-American Championships conclude on Sept. 29.
THOUSAND OAKS – A different group of Golden Bears completed the second day of the Sherwood Collegiate Cup on Saturday, with the Bears winning four of nine matches at the Sherwood Country Club.
Cal split in doubles, with the pair of Alex Aney and Ethan Schiffman besting Pacific’s Ran Amar and Vraj Patel 6-1 and the duo of Alex Chang and Jonathan Irwanto falling to Pacific’s Tiago Silva and Christof Schaertlin Coffey 7-5.
In singles, the 123rd-ranked Chang defeated New Mexico’s Dario Ciobotaru 6-4, 7-5 but fell to Pacific’s Silva 6-2, 6-2, Irwanto beat Patel 5-7, 6-4, 7-5 but lost to New Mexico’s Nicolas Recoura 6-2, 6-2, and Schiffman knocked off New Mexico’s Daniil Kakhniuk 6-2, 3-6, 6-3 but dropped a 7-6, 6-2 result to Pacific’s Schaertlin Coffey. Also, Aney fell in three sets to Pacific’s Amar 7-6(2), 4-6, 6-1.
The Sherwood Collegiate Cup ends on Sunday.
