BERKELEY – Multiple Golden Bears advanced to Friday’s rounds of 16 in singles and doubles, as the host Cal men’s tennis team began play in the ITA Northwest Regional Championships on Thursday at the Hellman Tennis Complex and Channing Tennis Courts.
Cal junior Lucas Magnaudet, seed third, and sophomore Alex Chang, seeded seventh, both had first-round byes in singles. Magnaudet later defeated Stanford’s Isaac Gorelik, 6-3, 6-4, and Chang beat Santa Clara’s Nick Cmager in the round of 32.
Both of Cal’s doubles teams – the fourth-seeded John Kim and Mikey Wright as well as the fifth-seeded Chang and Lucas Magnaudet – had first-round byes.
Players at the regional are vying for singles and doubles titles and are seeking berths in the ITA Northwest Super Regional Championships later this month as well as in the ITA National Fall Championships in November.
The regional tournament continues Friday with matches starting at 9 a.m.
