Cal Falls To USC In Pac-12 Semis

Cal’s Hannah Viller Moeller won in doubles and singles in Friday’s Pac-12 semifinal.

OJAI – The California women’s tennis team’s run in the Pac-12 Championship ended on Friday, when the 26th-ranked and second-seeded Golden Bears lost to 28th-ranked and sixth-seeded USC, 4-2, in the semifinals at Weil Tennis Academy.

Despite a win from Cal’s Erin Richardson and Hannah Viller Moeller in doubles – they defeated Emma Charney and Nathalie Rodilosso, 6-2, on court three – the Trojans captured matches on courts one and two to take the doubles point.

Later in singles, the Bears got wins from Viller Moeller and Jessica Alsola to tie the match, 2-2. But the Trojans won twice – clinching when Naomi Cheong defeated Cal senior Valentina Ivanov, 2-6, 6-0, 6-3 – to oust the Bears.

Cal’s record is 12-9, while USC – which advances to the final on Saturday – is 19-8.

The Bears now wait for the announcement of the NCAA Championship field on Monday for their next opponent.
