Alex Chang won two of Cal’s seven victories over the Bruins as the Sherwood Collegiate Cup came to an end Sunday.
THOUSAND OAKS – The California men’s tennis team ended the Sherwood Collegiate Cup on a good note, earning eight victories – including seven over UCLA –
on Monday at the Sherwood Country Club.
Cal senior Lucas Magnaudet defeated Texas A&M’s Kenner Taylor in singles, 7-5, 6-7(4), 10-5, but every other Golden Bear win came at the Bruins’ expense.
In doubles, the Cal pair of Alex Chang and John Kim defeated UCLA’s Alexander Hoogmartens and Govind Nada, 7-6(8), while Ryder Jackson and Timofey Stepanov beat the Bruins’ Emon van Loben Sels and Spencer Johnson, 6-1.
Chang collected a good win in singles when he beat UCLA’s 121st-ranked Gianluca Balotta, 6-1, 6-0, Jackson claimed his second win of the day in a 6-0, 6-2 result over Giacomo Revelli, and Kim prevailed 6-4, 6-2 over Stefan Leustian. Cal’s Derrick Chen bested Aadarsh Tripathi, 4-6, 6-4, 6-2, and Jonathan Irwanto beat van Loben Sels, 2-6, 6-4, 6-2.
“I was very happy with our togetherness as a team at the Sherwood Collegiate Cup,” said Kris Kwinta, Cal’s Peter Wright Director of Men’s Tennis. “There was great support for each other, through the good and the bad. We were loud and played inspired tennis. We were very energetic, and we lifted each other to some big victories.
“I was extremely pleased with doubles. We held up against every opponent and beat some very good teams. We had good wins in singles, especially the first and last days; not so much the second day. But we learned from it and came back with more energy and determination today. It was a true Bear weekend with a lot of toughness and resilience. Guys are maturing before my eyes. It was fun to be a part of.”
Cal plays its first dual match of the season when the Bears travel to Santa Clara to face the Broncos on Saturday at noon PT.
