STARKVILLE – Mississippi State women’s tennis is set to host the third-annual John Cade Invitational this weekend.
State welcomes players from Louisiana Tech, Louisville, North Texas and Ole Miss to compete at both the Rula Tennis Pavilion and A.J. Pitts Tennis Centre Friday through Sunday.
“It’s an honor to get to coach the team here and host the John Cade Invitational,” said head coach Chris Hooshyar. “Over the last 10 years, I got to see Mr. John [Cade] as an opposing sports administrator. I saw him sweeping the courts when it was wet, I saw him fixing fences when the windscreens were down and I saw him announcing the players. He is a very important person in the men’s and women’s tennis program here. I think to continue to honor him is really cool and I look forward to it.”
The tournament begins with doubles on Friday at 9 a.m. followed by another round of doubles beginning at 10:30 a.m. First round of singles is set to begin at 12:30 p.m. to close out Friday. Saturday and Sunday’s rounds will also begin at 9 a.m.
During last year’s John Cade Invitational, the Bulldogs posted 21 overall wins with 15 singles victories and six doubles wins.
The John Cade Invitational will be the third tournament MSU players have taken part in. Several Bulldogs kicked the fall off at the Debbie Southern Fall Classic in Greenville, S.C., and the ITA Southern Regional in Baton Rouge, La.
Alexandra Mikhailuk and Athina Pitta clinched the ITA Southern Regional Doubles title and became the first doubles pairing to do so at that tournament in program history. The duo will take part in the ITA National Fall Championships next week.
