MILWAUKEE, Wis., – Two members of Mississippi State’s men’s tennis team will represent the Bulldogs in the 47th Milwaukee Tennis Classic this weekend.
Dusan Milanovic and Benito Sanchez Martinez will open play with doubles at Nicolet High School on Friday at 9 a.m. taking on the Illinois tandem of Tyler Bowers and Jeremy Zhang.
It will be the second time Zhang has squared off against someone from MSU in as many tournaments, having lost in singles 6-1, 6-3 to Radomir Tomic in the opening round of qualifying at the ITF Champaign 15K on Sept. 11.
Milanovic is the No. 1 overall singles seed in the 32-man field. The junior transfer from Presbyterian is currently ranked 36th nationally and will be taking on Nebraska sophomore Leo Linquet at the Milwaukee Country Club on Friday at approximately 10:15 a.m.
Meanwhile, Sanchez Martinez is the sixth-overall seed and will remain at Nicolet High School to do battle with Yale sophomore Vignesh Gogineni.
If one or both Bulldogs win in singles, they will move on to the Round of 16 which is slated to start no earlier than Friday at noon.
Milanovic and Sanchez Martinez are the first State players to compete in the Milwaukee Tennis Classic since Giovanni Oradini and Nicolas Ocana in 2019. The singles winner of the tournament will receive an automatic wild card bid to the ITA National Fall Championships in San Diego, California in early November.
“This weekend is full of opportunities for Benito and Dusan here in Milwaukee,” said assistant coach Jake Jacoby. “In both doubles and singles, it gives us great matches against teams and players that we do not see often in our spring seasons, and we have a chance to qualify for Fall Nationals in November from this event. Overall, we are excited to see Benito and Dusan attack this weekend from start to finish with a growth mindset and competing at a high level.”
