GREENVILLE, S.C. – Mississippi State’s women’s tennis picked up a pair of doubles wins on the opening day of the Debbie Southern Fall Classic on Friday.
After dropping their first match during the morning, Alexandra Mikhailuk and Maria Rizzolo bounced back in their second to top the Vanderbilt tandem of Holly Staff and Sonya Macavei 8-2.
The Bulldogs’ doubles duo of Dharani Niroshan and Emily Surcey also lost their first doubles match but came back in the second to take down South Carolina’s Misa Malkin and Mckenna Schaefbauer 8-5.
MSU’s other doubles team, Maddie Bemisderfer and Maddie McKee, dropped a tight 8-6 decision to the Furman duo of Marrissa Pennings and Ellie Schulson.
Sydney Hrehor and Alessia Tagliente of the Bulldogs moved to the second-round due to a bye but fell to Monika Dedaj and Rosie Garcia Gross of Georgia Tech 8-2.
The Bulldogs also picked up a pair of singles wins as well. Rizzolo defeated Duke’s Cameron Morra 1-6, 7-6(4), 2-1 after Morra retired in the third set.
Hrehor gave State its fourth win of the day by taking down Danielle Schoenly of Ohio State 6-2, 6-4.
Eight of the 10 teams competing in this weekend’s tournament ended last season ranked among the top 50 in the ITA collegiate rankings: North Carolina (3), Duke (4), Ohio State (15), Wake Forest (23), Vanderbilt (26), South Carolina (28), Georgia Tech (32), and host Furman (39).
The tournament continues on Saturday with doubles play starting at 8 a.m. CT followed by a round of singles. The event concludes on Sunday with one round of singles play.
