FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – Mississippi State women’s tennis team is set to play in the first round of the 2023 SEC Championship against No. 57 Kentucky in Fayetteville, Ark.
The 14th-seeded Bulldogs and the 11th-seeded Wildcats will square off at 3 p.m. CT at the Billingsley Tennis Center.
Mississippi State tangled with Kentucky in its SEC opener with the Wildcats coming away with a 5-2 win. The Bulldogs two victories came from Gia Cohen who downed Elizabeth Stevens 6-2, 6-4 while Dharani Niroshan took down Makayla Mills 6-4, 2-6, 7-5.
MSU claimed a doubles victory against Kentucky with Gia Cohen and Maria Rizzolo beating Lidia Gonzalez and Florencia Urrutia 7-6(3).
Emmanouela Antonaki defeated Tennessee’s 21st-ranked Elza Tomase last Sunday. The win marks Antonaki’s fourth ranked win of the season and her 28th career ranked singles win.
Antonaki represents the Bulldogs in the ITA singles rankings at No. 68 in the country. Mississippi State enters the match 10-14 overall and are still looking for a conference win.
Kentucky enters Wednesday’s match 12-13 overall and 4-9 in conference play. UK dropped to Texas A&M 5-2 last Friday as well as lost to LSU 4-2 last Sunday.
The Wildcats lineup features two ranked singles players: Urrutia (42) and Stevens (118).
Additionally, Kentucky has the 22nd-ranked doubles tandem in Stevens and Carlota Molina.
