GREENVILLE, S.C. – Mississippi State’s women’s tennis picked up five wins on day two at the Debbie Southern Fall Classic hosted by Furman.
“Yesterday they battled hard, and I was proud of their attitudes and fight,” head coach Chris Hooshyar said. “Today we talked about being a little bit better than we were yesterday. We focused on being in the present with good emotional intelligence, and we did that. It was a good day for the ladies. Tomorrow we will go again!”
In doubles, MSU went 2-0 on the day with Jayna Clemens and Maria Rizzolo picking up an 8-4 win against Wake Forest’s tandem of Mia Ahmad and Aubery Nisbet. The second win came from State’s duo of Alexandra Mikhailuk and Athina Pitta as they took down Sankavi Gownder and Jingyi Li of Wake Forest 8-3.
In singles, Alexandra Mikhailuk bounced back after a tough loss on Friday by winning in straight sets over Meera Jesudason of Georgia Tech 6-3, 7-6(3).
Mikhailuk’s win was followed up by a decisive victory by Clemens who claimed her second victory of the tournament. The freshman defeated her opponent Nevena Carton of Wake Forest 6-1, 6-4.
In Flight 10, freshman Ava Rath also earned her second win for the weekend with a 6-3, 4-6, 6-4 victory over Sydney Orefice of Alabama.
The tournament concludes on Sunday with one round of singles play.
