WACO, Texas – Cesar Bouchelaghem ended a Dawg drought at the NCAA Men’s Tennis Singles Championships today, becoming the first Husky to advance out of the first round since 2013. The senior rolled to an emphatic 6-3, 6-1 victory today at Baylor’s Hurd Tennis Center, and he’ll play for a spot in the round of 16 on Wednesday.
College tennis will crown the NCAA singles and doubles champions this week, as the tournament takes place in the fall for the first time, as part of a two-year pilot program. The team national championships remain in their usual spring season.
The last Husky to earn a victory at NCAAs was Kyle McMorrow, who reached the round of 16 in 2013. Since then just two Dawgs qualified for the tournament, Jake Douglas in 2018 and Clement Chidekh in 2022 and both fell in the first round.

Bouchelaghem defeated Western Michigan’s Anton Arzhankin in straight sets today in one of the last matches of the day. He saved a break point in the very first game to hold serve, and then broke Arzhankin’s first two service games on the way to a 5-0 lead. Arzhankin got one break back and tightened the first set to 5-3 but Bouchelaghem held on his next service game to take the set.
Set two started in similar fashion as Bouchelaghem jumped out with an opening service break, and got a double break to take a 3-0 lead. Arzhankin broke back once for 3-1, but Bouchelaghem delivered another service break right back for 4-1. After holding serve to get within a game, Bouchelaghem took a 0-40 lead on Arzhankin’s next service, and on his third match point, he finished it off.
Tomorrow Bouchelaghem will take on Tennessee’s Shunsuke Mitsui, who is ranked 10th nationally and is one of the 9-16 seeded players in the bracket.
