Boilers Close Regular Season on the Road

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – The Purdue men’s tennis team will conclude the 2023 spring season on the road against No. 2 Ohio State and Penn State this weekend.

The Boilers hit the road for the final time this spring after suffering an 0-2 weekend to close out the home slate. Purdue will finish with a 2-13 record inside Schwartz Tennis Center, and look to snag their first road win in the final two matches.

The Boilermakers were able to improve their total scoring versus Big Ten opponents after they notched two victories against then-No. 69 Michigan State in singles. Michal Wozniak and Milledge Cossu both left the match with their first wins in Big Ten play this season. They also earned Purdue two points for the match, the most against a Big Ten opponent since April 28, 2022 when Purdue lost to Sparty 3-4 in the Big Ten tournament.

Daniel Labrador and Wozniak each dropped matches to ranked singles opponents, but all Boilermakers will have ample opportunity to defy expectations as they travel to Columbus. The Buckeyes are currently ranked No. 2 in the nation with a perfect 7-0 record in conference play. With the release of this week’s ITA Tennis Rankings, Ohio State has five ranked players in singles and three ranked doubles teams. The Buckeyes have not lost a match since March 8 when they were defeated 4-1 by the #5 South Carolina Gamecocks.

Purdue will close out the regular season in State College on Sunday when they take on the Penn State Nittany Lions. The Nittany Lions will look to right the ship as they enter the weekend on an eight-match losing streak. Like the Boilermakers, Penn State is winless in Big Ten play and have struggled against ranked opponents. The Nittany Lions hold an 0-8 record against Top-75 teams this spring.
