WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – The Purdue men’s tennis teams closes out their 2023 home schedule with matches against No. 69 Michigan State and No. 6 Michigan.
Purdue is coming off an 0-2 weekend on the road as they were defeated by No. 49 Wisconsin and No. 47 Nebraska. The two road losses continued the Boilers winless conference run this season as they dropped to 0-5.
The Boilers were able to end the weekend with their first point against a Big Ten opponent when Daniel Labrador secured his second win at No. 2 this season. The victory came in straight sets over the ranked Badgers, and was the first conference win of Labrador’s career.
The rest of the Boiler squad continues to struggle as Purdue has not won a doubles match since March 25 against then No. 72 Indiana. Purdue has also not won more than one singles match since March 26 in their 4-3 victory over the Butler Bulldogs.
The No. 69 Michigan State Spartans come to West Lafayette on Friday with a record less than .500 (8-11) but they boast two wins over ranked opponents in a schedule that has had them face 12 ranked teams in 19 total matches. The Spartans are 1-4 in Big Ten play and have only won a single match on the road this season. However, Michigan State sports multiple ranked players. In singles, the Spartans have ITAs No. 42 singles player in Ozan Baris and a top ten doubles team made up of Max Sheldon/Baris.
The No. 6 Michigan Wolverines come in with a wealth of riches. The Wolverines have gone 18-3 in the regular season and are 4-1 in conference play. Michigan has six of their seven road matches and have only lost to two opponents, No. 3 Ohio State (swept) and No. 7 Texas on a neutral site. The Wolverines have more ranked players than any team Purdue has faced thus far. They have four ranked players in singles (No. 6, 11, 32, 58) and the No. 8 doubles team. Both styles of play feature Gavin Young, No. 58 in singles and No. 8 in doubles, the son of Purdue head coach Geoff Young.
The Boilers will take the Wolverines to battle on senior day as Purdue looks to send off Tomasz Dudek and Michal Wozniak with a major upset victory.
