WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – The Purdue men’s tennis team will take on No. 49 Wisconsin and No. 47 Nebraska this Friday and Sunday in a two-match weekend on the road.
Following its first full weekend of conference play, the Boilers are anxious to get back on the court against more talented players in the Big Ten. Purdue is coming off an 0-2 weekend where they failed to score a point against Illinois and Northwestern, both ranked in the Top 25.
While the Boilers were unable to clinch a win against last weekend’s foes, a pair of Boilermakers would have liked for the matches to have been played out.
Michal Wozniak led No. 54 Steven Forman by a set and 3-2 lead in the second before Northwestern came up with the victory. Daniel Labrador also gained momentum on a ranked opponent when he began to mount a comeback against No. 115 Alex Petrov down a set. The match was cut off with a 4-4 stalemate in the second set. Neither Wozniak or Labrador have secured a ranked win in singles in their careers.
This weekend’s adversaries present no easy task for Purdue, as they take on another tandem of Top 50 teams, this time on the road. The Boilers are 0-2 away from Schwartz this season and have yet to score a point in hostile environments.
Wisconsin is currently 2-2 in the conference and coming off a 1-6 loss to the Ohio State Buckeyes. The Badgers are 7-1 at home with their only loss coming to Michigan on March 24. Along with their team rank, the Badgers have ITAs No. 56 doubles team featuring Gabriel Huber and Michael Minasyan.
Further west, the Nebraska Cornhusker sport the No. 47 ranked team with an identical 2-2 conference record to the Badgers. Nebraska’s two Big Ten losses have also come at the hands of the top ranked Buckeyes and Wolverines. Fresh off a victory against No. 73 Penn State, the Cornhuskers return home with their 5-2 record in the Sid and Hazel Dillon Tennis Center.
The Boilermakers are looking for their first win over a ranked opponent on the road since April 23, 2017 when Purdue toppled No. 30 Wisconsin in Madison. That weekend, Purdue went 2-0 against ranked opponents on the road as they defeated both No. 33 Minnesota in Minneapolis and the Badgers.
