WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – The Purdue men’s tennis team will begin their postseason run against the No. 7 seed Michigan State Spartans on Thursday.
Purdue enters the tournament as the No. 10 seed after their hard-fought defeat at Penn State last Sunday. The Boilermakers are slated for a conference rematch against the No. 7 seed Spartans where they look to avenge a 2-5 loss back in April. This is the second consecutive year that Purdue will face Michigan State in the Big Ten Tournament. Last year, the Boilers feel to the Spartans 3-4 in the first round of the Tournament.
The Boilermakers enter the postseason with no conference wins for the first time since the 2020 pandemic season. The Boilers stacked schedule proved to be daunting as they faced seven consecutive ranked opponents to end the year, including eight of their final ten matches. The Boilermakers have scored five total points against conference opponents this season, including two in their contested loss against the Nittany Lions in the final match of the regular season.
The lineup has seen talented opposition all season as four players have faced a ranked opponent in singles, with Daniel Labrador, Milledge Cossu and Michal Wozniak seeing ranked competition in both doubles and singles play.
The Spartans enter the postseason on a two-game losing streak with losses against No. 25 Illinois and No. 26 Northwestern in their final matches of the regular season. Michigan State holds the No. 68 overall spot in this week’s ITA National Rankings. Their talented lineup features one player ranked in singles and a top-10 doubles team. The Spartans have advanced to the second round of the last two tournaments before falling to Ohio State both times.
This year’s tournament will be held on the campus of Indiana University in Bloomington. All matches will feature live stats and free streaming on Big Ten Plus.
