Boilermakers Head to Bloomington for Hoosier Classic

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – Five Boilermakers are set to make their 2022-23 debut this weekend for the Purdue women’s tennis team at the Hoosier Classic in Bloomington. Juana Larranaga, Rut Galindo, Antonia Pareja, Ashlie Wilson and Emma Jane Barclay will take part in the three-day event hosted by the Boilermakers’ in-state rival.

Purdue will square off with players from Louisville, Xavier, Middle Tennessee State, Indiana and Northern Kentucky with three singles and four doubles sessions on the schedule.

Wilson, Pareja and Barclay will compete in the old gold and black for the first time in their careers. Larranaga finished with 16 singles wins and 12 doubles victories in her first campaign in West Lafayette last year. Galindo tied with Carmen Gallardo Guevara with 16 doubles victories in her sophomore season.

This weekend marks the second ITA sanctioned event for the Boilermakers. Last week, newcomers Liz Norman and Kennedy Gibbs received bids to the Milwaukee Tennis Classic.

Norman made a run to the quarterfinals of the event. She started with a 6-2, 6-3 win over Matilde Morais from North Texas, before picking up a ranked win over No. 110 and fifth-seeded Iva Zelic from Portland with a third-set tiebreak 6-7(4), 6-3, 10-1.

Norman’s run came to a close in the quarters against No. 3 seed and No. 82 ranked Julia Andeach from Notre Dame, 6-0, 7-6(5). Gibbs faced a tough task in her first match at Purdue against No. 4 seed and 86th ranked Naomi Cheong from Southern California, falling 6-1, 6-4.

The duo narrowly dropped their doubles match to No. 2-seed Georgia Drummy and Elizabeth Coleman from Duke, 6-4.
