Blue Devils Fall, 4-2, in ITA Kickoff Weekend Championship

DURHAM – The 15th-ranked Duke women’s tennis team fell, 4-2, to 14th-ranked Auburn in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Kickoff Weekend Championship in Durham on Saturday evening inside Sheffield Indoor Tennis Center.

With the win, Auburn (2-1) advances to the ITA National Team Indoors, while the Blue Devils (5-1) suffer their first loss of the season.  Duke also had its 19-match home winning streak in Sheffield come to an end.  

How It Happened

•    The Blue Devils opened doubles action leading on all three courts, but the Tigers quickly turned the momentum in their favor.  

•    On court two, Selin Ovunc and Ava Esposito Cogan and came back from dropping the first game and won six straight to win, 6-1, against Duke’s Ellie Coleman and Emma Jackson.

•    After taking a 2-0 lead, the Blue Devil duo of Iuliia Bryzgalova and Brianna Shvets split the next two games against DJ Bennett and Adeline Flach and led 3-1.  Bennett and Flach came back to win five consecutive games to clinch the doubles point with a 6-3 win.  

•    Duke’s team of Shavit Kimchi and Karolina Berankova jumped out to a 4-0 lead on court one and led 5-2, but Auburn’s 53rd-ranked duo of Ariana Arsenault and Carolyn Ansari would cut into the lead, 5-4, when the doubles point was clinched.  

•    The Blue Devils were able to even the score, 1-1, as 52nd-ranked Katie Codd was leading, 6-2, when 122nd-ranked Ovunc retired.  

•    In a matter of a couple of minutes, Auburn regained the lead, 3-1, with victories on courts one and two.
