DURHAM – The 15th-ranked Duke women’s tennis team opened action in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Kickoff Weekend on Friday afternoon with a 4-0 victory over Princeton inside the Sheffield Indoor Tennis Center to advance to the championship match on Saturday at 4 p.m.
The Blue Devils moved to 5-0 on the season and will face the 14th-ranked Auburn (1-1) in the title match from Durham. Princeton dropped to 1-1 on the year.
How It Happened
• After dropping the doubles point for the first time all season in the previous match, Duke came out and claimed the key point with victories at No. 1 and No. 3.
• On court three, the Blue Devil tandem of Iuliia Bryzgalova and Brianna Shvets jumped out to a 4-0 lead against Maia Sung and Isabella Chhiv. Princeton battled back to win two points, cutting the lead to 4-2. Bryzgalova and Shvets responded by winning two more games to take the 6-2 victory.
• Princeton was able to take court two as Leena Bennetto and Eva Elbaz registered a 6-4 win over Emma Jackson and Ellie Coleman. The Tigers took a 2-0 lead, but the Blue Devils came back to go ahead 3-2. Princeton came back winning four out of the next five games to earn the win.
• The doubles point came down to court one with Shavit Kimchi and Karolina Berankova against Maia Sung and Isabella Chhiv. Duke stormed out of the gate taking a 5-0 lead and had match point in the sixth game, but Sung and Chhiv would cut the lead to 5-1.
