COLUMBUS, Ohio – After picking up a combined five wins last weekend, sophomore Shelly Bereznyak of the No. 17 Ohio State women’s tennis team has been named Big Ten Athlete of the Week.
A native of Bat Yam, Israel, Bereznyak was 3-0 in singles and 2-0 in doubles at the season-opening Michigan Invitational, an individual tournament, in Ann Arbor, Mich., leading the Buckeyes in victories in the event.
In singles, she recorded a three-set win vs. Tennessee, dropped just one game in a straight-set victory vs. Ole Miss and prevailed in three sets over No. 40-ranked Jaedan Brown of Michigan. In doubles, Bereznyak and Sydni Ratliff won 6-1 over Ole Miss and 6-2 vs. Michigan.

The Buckeyes begin dual match play this weekend, as they host No. 4-ranked Oklahoma at 11 a.m. Sunday in the Ty Tucker Tennis Center.
Ohio State will then serve as an ITA Kickoff Weekend site, welcoming Old Dominion, Wake Forest and No. 24 Tennessee Jan. 27-28. Day one features the Buckeyes vs. the Monarchs at 10 a.m., followed by the Demon Deacons vs. the Lady Vols at 1 p.m. Day two, the championship will be at 4 p.m., followed by the consolation about 7 p.m. The site winner will advance to the ITA National Team Indoor Championship.
Admission and parking are free for all Buckeye women’s tennis regular season home events.
