Carl Emil Overbeck won in doubles in the morning and then won in singles in the afternoon Thursday at the California Tennis Club.
SAN FRANCISCO – All three of the California men’s tennis players competing in the Battle in the Bay Classic on Friday posted victories, as the annual tournament began its 13th iteration at the California Tennis Club. Carl Emil Overbeck and Alex Chang won handily in doubles, while Overbeck and Derrick Chen advanced in singles with first-round victories.
In doubles, Chang and Overbeck – who paired with former teammate Yuta Kikuchi to capture the previous two doubles titles at the Battle in the Bay Classic – defeated Nikolas Kuraica and Moritz Hoffmann of host San Francisco, 8-2, in the opening round of 16. The Cal duo next faces UC Santa Barbara’s Gianluca Brunkow and Pablo Masjuan in the quarterfinals Friday at 9 a.m. PT.
Chen took on USF’s Kuraica in the opening round of 32 in singles, with the Cal junior besting the Don, 6-4, 6-2. Chang, another Cal junior, had a challenging draw against San Diego’s fifth-seeded Iiro Vasa, with the Bear pushing the 27th-ranked Torero to three sets in a loss, 6-4, 6-7(4), 6-1. In the Bears’ last match of the day, Overbeck, also a junior, beat USD’s Lambert Ruland, 7-6(4), 2-6, 6-0.
On Friday at 10:30 a.m., in the singles main draw round of 16, Chen plays Michigan State’s fifth-seeded and 37th-ranked Ronnie Hohmann, while Overbeck plays Virginia’s third-seeded and 13th-ranked Jeffrey von der Schulenburg. At 2 p.m. Friday, Chang will meet Stanford’s Anders Matta in the qualifying round of 16 of the consolation bracket.
The Battle in the Bay Classic concludes on Sunday.
