Berta Passola Folch won twice in singles and once in doubles on Saturday at regionals.
BERKELEY/MORAGA – The California women’s tennis team posted a strong second day of performances at the ITA Northwest Regional Championships, capturing 18 of 20 matches at the Golden Bears’ Hellman Tennis Complex and the Korth Tennis Complex at Saint Mary’s. All three Cal doubles teams won to advance to Sunday’s main draw round of 16, while seven of eight Bears each won twice in main draw singles to likewise reach Sunday’s round of 16.
Cal’s second-seeded Jessica Alsola, ranked 30th in singles, had a close first match, with the senior defeating Gonzaga’s Safien Boulonois 7-6(4), 7-5 in the round of 64. In the evening, Alsola beat Sacramento State’s Madelyn Ferreros 6-3, 6-0 in Cal’s last match of the day.
Berta Passola Folch, Lan Mi, Mao Mushika, Tiziana-Marie Schomburg, Sophie Hernandez and Naomi Xu joined Alsola in the round of 16, with none of the six Bears losing a set through the first two rounds of singles. Makenna Thiel battled Seattle’s Lamija Avdic in a taut three-setter in the round of 32, with the Cal senior falling 6-1, 3-6, 7-5.
In the round of 32 in main draw doubles, Cal’s fifth-seeded Passola Folch and Thiel beat San Jose State’s Olaya Bances Iglesias and Nahjime Dho 8-4, sixth-seeded Hernandez and Mi defeated Eastern Washington’s Kelly Arends and Leandra Nizetic 8-6, and ninth-seeded Schomburg and Xu bested Avdic and Daria Nazarenko 8-4.
Cami Brown played the Bears’ lone match in Moraga, with the Cal veteran falling to Seattle’s Natalia Michta 6-4, 6-0 in consolation singles.
The regional championships continue Sunday in Berkeley, with matches starting at 9 a.m. PT.
