Cami Brown split her singles matches on the first day of regionals in the East Bay.
BERKELEY – The California women’s tennis team opened play in the ITA Northwest Regional Championships on Friday at the Hellman Tennis Complex, with Cal graduate student Cami Brown winning her qualifying singles opener but falling in the second round.
Saint Mary’s is also hosting matches of the northwest regional championships in Moraga.
Brown defeated Portland State’s Ayra Salim 7-6(2), 6-4 in the round of 64 before dropping a 6-0, 7-6(4) result to Sacramento State’s Emilija Pranyte in the round of 32. Pranyte advances to the singles main draw, while Brown next plays in a consolation draw.
Most of the Golden Bears will start play at regionals Saturday in Berkeley, where eight of the Bears – Jessica Alsola, Lan Mi, Makenna Thiel, Berta Passola Folch, Mao Mushika, Tiziana-Marie Schomburg, Sophie Hernandez and Naomi Xu – are in the singles main draw. The doubles teams of Passola Folch and Thiel, Schomburg and Xu, and Mi and Hernandez will likewise play their main draw matches at Cal starting at 9 a.m. PT on Saturday, with the singles main draw scheduled to start at 11 a.m. PT.
