Bears Host Cal Fall Invitational

While some Bears are still playing at ITA All-Americans in North Carolina, Tiziana-Marie Schomburg and a large contingent of the team will host the Cal Fall Invitational in Berkeley.


The California women’s tennis team hosts the Cal Fall Invitational from Friday through Sunday at the Hellman Tennis Complex and Channing Tennis Courts.
 
While Golden Bears Jessica Alsola and Mao Mushika are still playing at the ITA All-American Championships this week in Cary, North Carolina, much of the team – including Cami Brown, Makenna Thiel, Tiziana-Marie Schomburg, Sophie Hernandez and Naomi Xu – is in Berkeley. The Bears will compete against players from Nevada, Pacific, Sacramento State, Saint Mary’s, San Jose State, Santa Clara and Stanford in singles and doubles in the annual tournament.

Poll Position
Five Bears are ranked in the first ITA singles poll of 2024-25 – No. 30 Jessica Alsola, No. 33 Katja Wiersholm, No. 80 Lan Mi, No. 106 Berta Passola Folch and No. 107 Mao Mushika. Three Cal pairs are ranked in doubles – No. 16 Alsola and Mushika, No. 25 Passola Folch and Wiersholm, and No. 79 Mi and freshman Naomi Xu.
 
Bears In The ITA All-American Championships
The Cal doubles pair of Jessica Alsola and Mao Mushika won its main draw opening match on Wednesday at the ITA All-American Championships, while Alsola, in main draw singles, lost her opener at the national event in Cary, North Carolina.
 
The Golden Bear tandem defeated Ohio State’s third-seeded and fourth-ranked Luciana Perry and Sydni Ratliff 6-4, 6-4 to advance to the round of 16 on Thursday, when they’ll face Georgia’s Dasha Vidmanova and Aysegul Mert at 1:30 p.m. PT.
 
Alsola fell to Pennsylvania’s 70th-ranked Sabine Rutlauka 4-6, 6-1, 6-4 in the round of 64. The Cal senior moves onto the consolation bracket and plays Ohio State’s Perry in the first round on Thursday at 7 a.m. PT.
