Derrick Chen won twice in doubles and once in singles Saturday at ITA regionals.
SEATTLE – Three doubles teams from the California men’s tennis team advanced to quarterfinals of the ITA Northwest Regional Championships on Saturday, with each pair winning twice at the Nordstrom Tennis Center. Five Golden Bears also reached the singles round of 16.
In their second match of the day, Cal’s 13th-ranked and second-seeded Alex Chang and Mikey Wright defeated Ryan Torres and Sam De Vries 8-3 in the round of 16. Also in the round of 16, Cal’s third-seeded and 25th-ranked Theo Dean and Carl Emil Overbeck beat Portland’s Cade Fernando and Maxim Groysman 8-6 while the Bears’ seventh-seeded Derrick Chen and Timofey Stepanov bested Pacific’s Christof Schaertlin Coffey and Tiago Silva 8-7(5).
Five of six Bears captured singles victories – second-seeded and 44th-ranked Dean beat Santa Clara’s Alexander Watanabe Eriksson 6-4, 6-3; third-seeded and 56th-ranked Overbeck bested Gonzaga’s Jay Fairclough 6-3, 6-2; eighth-seeded and 123rd-ranked Chang defeated Sacramento State’s Nick Bowles 4-6, 6-2, 6-3; Nos. 9-16 seed Chen beat Lucas Bollinger of UC Davis 3-6, 6-2, 6-1; and Ethan Schiffman moved past Pacific’s Vraj Patel 7-6(6), 6-4.
