Pac-12 Conference

Carl Emil Overbeck came close to reaching his third straight doubles final at the Battle in the Bay Classic.

SAN FRANCISCO – Carl Emil Overbeck had won the last two doubles titles at the Battle in the Bay Classic, but the third time wasn’t a charm for the California men’s tennis junior, as Overbeck and Alex Chang fell in the doubles semifinals Saturday at the California Tennis Club. The Golden Bears came close but lost to Arizona’s Herman Hoeyerral and Colton Smith, 8-7(1).

In the consolation singles quarterfinals, Chang dropped a 2-6, 6-3, 10-8 match to Baylor’s Luc Koenig.

The Bears collected wins in extra singles matches later in the day, with Derrick Chen defeating Florida’s 86th-ranked Nate Bonetto, 7-6(1), 6-0.

The Battle in the Bay Classic ends Sunday.
