All-Pac-12 First-Team selections Jessica Alsola and Haley Giavara will open the NCAA Championship on Friday, when Cal plays USD.

BERKELEY – On the eve of the NCAA Championship, California women’s tennis earned five spots on the All-Pac-12 teams – with Haley Giavara and Jessica Alsola leading the way with first-team selections – the conference announced on Thursday. The Pac-12 named Katja Wiersholm to its second team, and Hannah Viller Moeller and Berta Passola Folch claimed honorable mention.

This marks the third All-Pac-12 honor for Giavara and Viller Moeller, who also collected conference kudos in 2021 and 2022. Sophomores Alsola and Wiersholm garnered All-Pac-12 recognition for the second straight year, while Passola Folch earned the honor in her first season.

Last Thursday, the two-time All-American – who is double majoring in legal studies and sociology – was named the Pac-12 Scholar-Athlete of the Year. Giavara ended each of her three previous seasons ranked in the top 40 in singles, as she was 15th in 2020, 27th in 2021 – when she helped the Bears win their first Pac-12 tournament championship – and 36th in 2022, when she led Cal to the Pac-12 regular-season title.

Alsola was named to the NCAA Singles Championship field earlier this week, with the individual tournament slated for May 22-27 in Orlando, Florida. The Fresno product, who will compete in the tournament for the second time, has a 29-4 record – which includes a 19-1 dual-match record and a 9-1 Pac-12 mark – and leads the Bears in singles wins. She has had a strong second season and posted a career-best 18-match winning streak in singles that was snapped in the regular-season finale. Alsola had an excellent fall, when she won the consolation singles crown in the ITA All-American Championships. She was named to the All-Pac-12 second team as a freshman in 2022, when she was a key member of Cal’s…
