Battle in the Bay in the Books

SAN FRANCISCO – As the academic year begins on campus, the fall tennis season began over the weekend at The California Tennis Club. Four student-athletes participated at the Battle in the Bay, which featured teams from around the country and many players ranked in the preseason ITA poll.

Aryan Chaudhary and Filip Kolasinski earned placements in the main draw in singles, going 1-1 and 0-2, respectively. Chaudhary knocked off the nation’s No. 120 player in Portland’s Sema Pankin in the opening round before falling to No. 45 Tim Zeitvogel (Pepperdine) in the round of 16. Kolasinski battled two opponents to tight finishes, but fell in two sets to both opponents.

Neel Rajesh and Isaac Gorelik competed in the qualifying round, with Rajesh going 3-1 in singles to lead the way. Returning to the program after a year away, Rajesh advanced to the semifinal round in the qualifying bracket, besting two opponents from UNLV and one from UC Santa Cruz. Gorelik, a transfer from Tufts, picked up his first two wins at Stanford, while the doubles tandem of Rajesh and Gorelik went 1-1.

The Cardinal heads to Tulsa, Oklahoma for the second tournament of the fall, the ITA All-American Championships. The event begins Oct. 1 and runs through Oct. 9.
