Baris Advances to NCAA Singles Championships Second Round


STILLWATER, Okla. – Michigan State sophomore Ozan Baris advanced to the second round of the NCAA Singles Championships Monday while graduate student Ronald Hohmann III was eliminated in his opener.
 
Baris, a native of Okemos, Mich., clinched his second career NCAA Championships win after also having a claimed a win in last year’s opening round as a freshman. The tournament’s No. 8 overall seed won in straight sets over Auburn’s 31st-ranked Tyler Stice, 6-2, 6-4.
 
The Big Ten Player of the Year moves on to play the winner of No. 40 Gilles-Arnaud Bailly of Texas versus Stanford’s 55th-ranked Samir Banjeree on Tuesday, with the first serve time yet to be determined.
 
Also tomorrow, Baris teams up with junior Max Sheldon in the NCAA Doubles Championships opener vs. national No. 2 duo Dhakshineswar Suresh and Holden Koons of Wake Forest, the nation’s winningest doubles team.
 
Baris and Sheldon defeated the No. 1 seeded doubles team in the first round of last year’s NCAA Championships but fell in the round of 16. The duo bounced back the next fall however, winning the ITA Fall National Championship in November and reached as high as No. 1 in this season’s ITA rankings, currently No. 16 with a 12-5 record.
 
Earlier in the afternoon, Hohmann, the other Spartan entrant in the NCAA Singles Championships was on the other side of 1-6, 4-6 match, effectively ending his collegiate career. He was dropped by sixth-ranked Oliver Tarvet of San Diego. Hohmann, an experienced grad-transfer addition to the MSU squad for the 2023-24 season was in his third career NCAA Singles tournament.
 
The native of Oyster Bay, N.Y. bows out after helping the Spartans to an unprecedented team season, having played the majority of matches at the No. 1 or No. 2 slot, earning Second Team All-Big Ten honors and reaching a career-high No. 11 in the ITA rankings.
