Badgers win at Notre Dame for sixth straight

SOUTH BEND, Ind. – The Wisconsin women’s tennis team (9-2) did it again on Sunday, pulling out a 5-2 win at Notre Dame (8-2) to extend its win streak to six matches. This is the Badgers’ best start to a season since the 2018-19 campaign, where they also started 9-2.

The Badgers may have started down, but they most definitely were never out. The team dropped a pair of hard-fought doubles matches to the Fighting Irish, giving Notre Dame a 1-0 lead heading into singles. The Fighting Irish also claimed the first singles point and tallied first-set wins on courts one and two.

But from there, the comeback was on.

At No. 1 singles, No. 57 Ava Markham claimed her second ranked win of the season, rallying to beat No. 91 Page Freeman, 2-6, 6-3, 6-4. On court two, UW’s Maria Sholokhova took a similar path to victory, falling behind, but ultimately cruising to a 4-6, 6-1, 6-2 win over Julia Andreach.

On courts 3-5, Alina Mukhortova, Taylor Cataldi and No. 100 Xinyu Cai all had impressive straight-set wins, ensuring the Wisconsin the 5-2 win.

Next up, the Badgers will open their Big Ten campaign in Minneapolis with a pair of matches against Minnesota and Iowa. Wisconsin takes on the Gophers on Friday, March 3 at 3:30 p.m. before tangling with the Hawkeyes on Saturday, March 4 at Noon.
