AUBURN, Ala. — The Wisconsin men’s tennis team fell to the Auburn Tigers Sunday afternoon in Alabama. The Tigers (7-2) pulled off a 6-1 win over the Badgers (5-3).
UW dropped its second doubles point of the season but were able to pick up a win at the No. 3 position. Seniors Robin Parts and Sebastian Vile got off to a hot start, dominating Auburn’s Tyler Stice and Alejandro Moreno 5-0, and ending up pulling off a 6-2 victory.
Down 1-0, singles play got started and all of the Badgers were putting up a fight in their matches. Unfortunately, it wasn’t enough as the Tigers, who poised the biggest competition of the season thus far for Wisconsin, easily obtained the next three points needed for them to clinch the match 4-0.
Even as underdogs, the Badgers did not give up. Three of the six matches went into the third set, with Jason Hildebrandt and Vile each winning their second sets to force the third.
Grad student Jared Pratt loss a close match to the No. 90 Tyler Stice at No. 1 singles after grabbing the first set 7-5. In a third-set tiebreaker, Pratt was unable to come out on top but held his own and gave Stice a run for his money, dropping a close 1-0 (10-7) tiebreaker to decide the match.
The only point of the day for Wisconsin was delivered by Hildebrandt at No. 2 singles with a comeback win. After dropping a close first set 4-6, he rallied back and took the second set in a 7-6 (7-3) tiebreaker. In the third set, Hildebrandt fought for every point, finishing it out with a 6-3 win to clinch his match.
Up Next: The Badgers stay on the road and travel to South Bend, Indiana, to take on the Notre Dame Fighting Irish at 11 a.m. CT on Saturday.
