MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – As the weekend comes to a close, individuals from the Tennessee women’s tennis team have been dominating at the ITA Ohio Valley Regional Championships, hosted by MTSU. Two Lady Vols reached the singles quarterfinals while three pairs advanced to the doubles semifinals.
No. 81 Catherine Aulia has been a steady force in singles, logging four straight victories and advancing to the singles semifinals. The Rosebury, Australia, native secured a three-hour, three-set thriller on Sunday evening over Vanderbilt’s Valeria Ray, 7-6(2), 5-7, 7-5. Aulia is set to face No. 34 Bridget Stammel from Vanderbilt on Monday at 11 a.m.
Elim Yan has excelled throughout the tournament, reaching the singles quarterfinals. The freshman nabbed four wins before falling to Vanderbilt’s Valeria Ray in a 6-2, 6-2 result on Sunday afternoon.
In doubles, the pairs of No. 23 Aulia and Elza Tomase, and Conley Raidt and Saray Yli-Piipari, and Vanesa Suarez and Leyla Britez Risso each advanced to the doubles semifinals. Aulia and Tomase will square off against teammates Raidt and Yli-Piipari on Monday at 1:30 p.m. Suarez and Britez Risso will square off against Xavier’s Clara Owen and Abby Nugent also on Monday at 1:30 p.m.
Leyla Britez Risso and Vanesa Suarez have each collected four victories, three in doubles and one in singles while Maeve Thornton logged two doubles wins.
Until this point in the tournament, the Lady Vols have tallied 28 total victories, 14 in singles and 14 in doubles.
