TUCSON, Ariz. – #17 Arizona went two for two in their doubleheader against NAU and #66 Gonzaga on Friday, March 3 at LaNelle Robson Tennis Center. The ‘Cats defeated the Lumberjacks 4-1 and the Bulldogs 6-1.
Northern Arizona
The Wildcats won the doubles point on courts one and two when freshmen duo Eric Padgham and Dominique Rolland swept Daniel Dillon and Facundo Tumosa 6-0 at two doubles. Then Jared Horwood and Nick Lagaev clinched the point with a 6-4 win over Piotr Galus and Alex Groves at one doubles.
Starting with the advantage, Arizona picked up three singles wins to finalize their first victory of the day. At one singles, #88 Colton Smith swept Tumosa 6-0 in set one then finished him off 6-1 in the second. #117 Herman Hoeyeraal also defeated his opponent in straight sets, 6-1, 6-0 against Galus. Padgham clinched the match for the Wildcats at six singles against Groves. The Australian fell 6-7(5) in set one then battled back to win 6-1 in the final two.
The ‘Cats remain perfect in their series against the Lumberjacks now 18-0.
Gonzaga
Arizona proved to be doubles hungry today as they won the second doubles point of the day on courts one and three. Hoeyeraal and Gustaf Strom swiftly defeated Pablo Gomez and Tom Hann 6-1 at three doubles then Jonas Ziverts and Jay Friend clinched 6-4 defeating the #57 doubles pair Matthew Hollingworth and Sasha Trkulja.
In a singles competition under the lights, the Wildcats took five singles matches in straight sets to finalize their second victory of the day and remain undefeated at home. Hoeyeraal finished first at four singles against Hollingworth beating him 6-4 in the first set then sweeping him 6-0 in the second. The Norwegian went three for three in all three of his contests today, winning two singles matches and one doubles match. Strom was next after he defeated Oliver Andersson 6-2, 6-1 at three single. Clinching the match was #45 Ziverts who won 6-3, 6-4 against Trkulja. #88 Colton Smith, at two singles, and #110 Nick Lagaev, at five singles, won their matches in set straights to extend Arizona’s final lead to 6-1.
The ‘Cats also remain perfect in their series against Gonzaga and are now 10-3 heading into their away match against #38 Oklahoma on Monday, March 6.
