TUCSON, Ariz. – Arizona Men’s Tennis head coach Clancy Shields announced Tuesday the hiring of Jordan Gobatie as an assistant coach for the Wildcats.
Gobatie will be joining Shields and associate head coach Alex Free after spending the 2023-24 season with Arizona women’s tennis team. During his first year with the Wildcats, Gobatie helped guide the team to their first NCAA Championship bid since 2014. Over the season, Arizona tallied 17 wins, including four conference wins and a victory over Oregon in the first round of the Pac-12 Championships.
Prior to Arizona, Gobatie spent the 2022-23 season as an assistant coach for Boise State’s women’s tennis team. During his time with the Broncos, the team collected 13 wins and their program’s first-ever appearance in the Mountain West Conference semi-finals.
“It’s a privilege to be able to work with this group.” Gobatie said. “It’s going to be an exciting year for Arizona tennis. I can’t wait to see what this program can accomplish. A huge thanks to Coach Shields and Coach Free for giving me an opportunity to be here.”
Before his time at Boise State, Gobatie spent two seasons as a volunteer assistant coach at Arizona State. Across the two seasons, the Sun Devils charted a 32-17 record, an appearance in the Pac-12 Championship final, and consecutive NCAA Championships appearances.
As an assistant coach for his alma mater, NAU, Gobatie helped guide the Lumberjacks through a historic 2018-19 season. The team won their first Big Sky Tournament title since 1999, made their second-ever NCAA Championships berth and finished the season with a 9-1 conference record. Gobatie was a First Team All-Big Sky honoree in NAU in 2015.
During the 2017-18 season, Gobatie held the position of head coach of men’s tennis at Cypress College. The season saw an 8-2 conference record, leading the way to an Orange Empire Conference championship victory. The team was ranked as high as No. 3 in California.
