The day was paced by a strong start from Rebeka Mertena and Lauren Anzalotta in doubles. The pairing raced out of the gates, winning the first seven games of the match before dropping one to the Virginia pairing of Hibah Shaikh and Meggie Navarro. It did not take long for the pair to close it out, winning the next game in just five points to finish off the 8-1 winner.
Then, moving into singles, Esther Adeshina came out with the same fury as she did a night ago, cruising to a 6-1, 6-1 victory on Court 4. The crafty junior has dropped just six games in 30 games played in this tournament.
Then came Anzalotta, again playing with fire and intensity on the singles court. She went on five different runs during the match where the transfer won four consecutive points or more. Her success sustained throughout the match, culminating in a 6-1, 6-2 victory.
“Lauren got here in the summer so she could spend some time in the classroom, on the court and in the weight room,” head coach Alison Ojeda said. “She has been going strong for about 16 weeks now and is still improving every time she steps on the court. Today is another example of that. She is able to play at a high level and we got to see just what she is capable of. What she brings goes beyond tennis, she is an amazing personality and a fanastic person to have in the locker room conversation. She really makes everyone better.”
