Anzalotta Named SEC Player of the Week

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Tennessee women’s tennis senior Lauren Anzalotta landed SEC Player of the Week honors after recording an undefeated showing against UCF and Florida State, notching four exceptional victories. The conference announced on Wednesday that Anzalotta picked up the fourth weekly award of the season.

The San Juan, Puerto Rico, native was the lone Lady Vol to post a perfect record, while also collecting her first-career clinch against Florida State. She tallied her first weekend win in doubles against the Knights on Friday evening. Anzalotta and her partner, Cathrine Aulia, took down Sophia Biolay and Stefani Webb in a 6-3 decision. She hung a straight-set win in singles while playing Jalessa Leslie in a 6-4, 6-3 result.

“I am so proud of Lauren,” head coach Alison Ojeda said. “Great players have teammates who depend on them to perform. Depending on your perspective, that is an added pressure or it is a respectful and earned compliment. Lauren continues to work in practice and it is what has given her the freedom to compete at a high level when a match is on the line. Her team respects her, loves her and appreciates all she does to help better our program.”

Against Florida State, Anzalotta took care of business yet again in doubles with Aulia, as they downed Laura Putz and Millie Bissett, 6-2. The duo recorded the Lady Vols’ only doubles win on Sunday. After doubles, the match was locked up at three apiece, with the contest coming down to Anzalotta and Putz on court five. After dropping the first set, 4-6, she rallied back to blank Putz in the second set with a 6-0 win. With the match fate resting in the final set, Anzalotta pushed herself to string together a thrilling 7-5 victory and clinch the match for Tennessee.

This marks the first time in Anzalotta’s four-year career that she has earned a weekly conference honor.

“Being able to clinch for my team was an amazing experience,” Anzalotta said. “I am very proud of myself, but I couldn’t do it without my coaches and teammates. They’re the ones that push me to do better and be a better person on and off the courts. Honestly, I can only thank them and all the staff members who help to prepare our bodies each and every day to compete and give our all.”

The two victories extended the Lady Vols’ winning streak to three, as they notched eight wins to round out their non-conference slate. Anzalotta leads the team in doubles wins with a 6-1 record and is tied at the top…
