Alvarez Sande Bounces Back with Three-Set Victory

CARY, N.C. – Washington State sophomore Eva Alvarez Sande completed her singles run at the 2023 ITA All-American Championships with a three-set victory Sunday at the Cary Tennis Park.

Alvarez Sande rebounded from Saturday’s opening-round loss to post a 7-5, 1-6, 6-2 win over San Diego’s Elizabeth Goldsmith in the consolation draw. The Cougar sophomore, who dropped her first set Saturday following a late break of serve, turned the tables Sunday, breaking Goldsmith late in the first for the 7-5 win. Goldsmith came out strong in the second set with multiple service breaks to force a deciding third set.

In the third, it was all Alvarez Sande. She jumped out early and never looked back, cruising to a 6-2 set to secure the three-set win.

Alvarez Sande will now turn to the doubles court where she a teammate Elyse Tse opening doubles qualifying Monday with a first-round match against Syracuse’s Maria Ines Fonte and Miyuka Kimoto. The Cougar duo enter the event ranked No. 25 in the ITA Preseason Doubles rankings.
