STANFORD, Calif. – Two-time NCAA team champion Janice Shin has been added to Peter and Helen Bing Director of Women’s Tennis Frankie Brennan’s staff as an assistant coach, Brennan announced Thursday. Shin is making a return to The Farm after a standout playing career with the Cardinal from 2018-21.

“I am thrilled to be able to welcome an accomplished alumna like Janice to the coaching staff,” Brennan said. “She was an outstanding player during her collegiate career, a tireless worker and dependable teammate whose game elevated in the biggest moments. She knows what it takes to succeed at Stanford and it’s a full-circle moment to bring her back on staff. Our team will learn a great deal from having her on board and our program is fortunate to have her in this new role.”

“I’m excited to return to The Farm as assistant coach,” Shin said. “This opportunity feels like a natural continuation—Frankie recruited me as a student-athlete in 2016, and now, here we are in 2024. I’m grateful for the chance to work alongside him and this group of amazing student-athletes.”

Shin was a key contributor on Stanford’s 2018 and 2019 NCAA championship teams, going a perfect 8-0 in postseason matches and earning NCAA All-Tournament Team recognition at No. 5 singles both years. As a freshman in 2018, she clinched NCAA victories in the second round (No. 17 Michigan) and Round of 16 (No. 1 North Carolina) and finished the year with 11 consecutive straight-set wins.

She was automatic again in 2019, delivering the Cardinal its record 20th NCAA crown, clinching a sweep of No. 2 Georgia in the final with a 6-2, 6-4 win on court five. Two of her other three victories in that postseason pushed Stanford on, clinching in the Round of 16 against No. 14 Kansas and again in the semifinals over No. 1 North Carolina.

“Lele and Frankie always reminded us of the Stanford Tennis legacy—regardless of our seed or ranking, we were never counted out,” Shin added. “There’s a confidence here, not just in yourself, but in your teammates, the staff, and the program. Winning the national championship as the No. 15 seed in my first year and clinching it again the next, alongside lifelong friends, is one of my proudest moments. I can’t wait to hit the ground running and get this journey started!”

Also in 2019, Shin paired with Melissa Lord in doubles to produce NCAA victories in the semifinals and championship despite not having played together in seven months. They were…
