SAN DIEGO – California women’s tennis junior Jessica Alsola won in straight sets Saturday to advance to the consolation singles final in the ITA National Fall Championships at the Barnes Tennis Center.
Alsola defeated Pennsylvania’s Esha Velaga 6-1, 6-4, in the semifinal. The Fresno product will next play Stanford’s 26th-ranked Connie Ma in the final Sunday at 11 a.m. PT. The match will mark the first meeting between the Golden Bear and the Cardinal players.
This is the second consolation singles final at a national tournament for Alsola. Last season, she captured the consolation singles title at the ITA All-American Championships.
TEMPE, Ariz. – The Golden Bears continued play in the Thunderbird Invitational on Saturday, winning two of five singles matches and going 0-2 in doubles. Lan Mi stayed perfect in singles at 2-0 and Makenna Thiel improved to 1-1 at Arizona State’s Whiteman Tennis Center.
Mi, a junior, beat Michigan’s Reese Miller, 6-2, 6-3, while Thiel, also a junior, bested Grand Canyon’s Valeriia Krokhotina, 7-6(4), 6-3.
Both the ITA National Fall Championships and the Thunderbird Invitational end Sunday.
