Alabama Women’s Tennis Opens Blue Gray National Tennis Classic Against No. 32 Illinois Friday


TUSCALOOSA, Ala. ––Alabama women’s tennis team will open the two-day Blue Gray National Tennis Classic against No. 32 Illinois on Friday. First serve between the Crimson Tide (5-2) and the Fighting Illini (6-3) will be at 9 a.m. CT at Lagoon Park in Montgomery, Ala.

Venues:Lagoon Park and O’Connor Tennis Center 

Opponents: Arizona, Furman, Illinois, Texas Tech, Tulsa, Wake Forest, Yale

The Blue Gray National Tennis Classic

  • Alabama is one of eight teams competing in the women’s competition, as Arizona, Furman, Illinois, Texas Tech, Tulsa, Wake Forest and Yale round out the field  
  • Alabama has won the tournament twice, capturing back-to-back wins in 2014 and 2015
  • Five of the eight tournament teams rank inside the ITA Top 75 with Arizona entering the tournament ranked 31st followed by No 32. Illinois, No. 38 Wake Forest, No. 47 Texas Tech and No. 58 Yale

About The Crimson Tide

  • UA enters the match holding a 5-2 record
  • The Tide is coming off a win over Tulane, 5-2, last Saturday
  • Klara Milicevic leads UA in singles with an undefeated dual match record as she heads into the weekend with six wins
  • Additionally, Anne Marie Hiser is undefeated in singles this season with four wins at the No. 6 spot
  • In doubles, Loudmilla Bencheikh and Ola Pitak are undefeated with a perfect 3-0 start at the No. 2 spot, while Ola and Kasia Pitak are 2-0 at the No. 3 spot

Scouting the Fighting Illini

  • No. 32 Illinois enters the match with a 6-3 record
  • The Fighting Illini are coming off a win, defeating Penn State, 4-0, last Sunday
  • The Tide and the Fighting Illini will go head-to-head for the eighth time in series history with UA holding a 6-1 advantage 
  • Illinois won the last meeting in February 2019, 4-1
  • Ashley Yeah leads Illinois, ranking 102nd in singles with a 10-4 overall record and a 4-2 dual match record 
  • In doubles, No. 31 Katherine Duong and Megan Heuser hold a 5-1 dual match record on court one
