Alabama Men’s Tennis Sends Filip Planinsek and German Samofalov to ITA All-American Championships


TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – Filip Planinsek and German Samofalov open competition this week at the ITA All-American Championships in Tulsa, Oklahoma. Samofalov begins in the singles qualifying round, set to start Monday at 7 a.m. CT, while Planinsek opens in the singles main draw on Wednesday.

Additionally, the UA duo will compete in the doubles main draw, beginning on Wednesday.

Main Draw – Oct. 5-9

The Players

  • Filip Planinsek started the 2022-23 season ranked 13th in the ITA’s preseason singles poll
  • In doubles, Planinsek and German Samofalov enter the season at No. 33 in the rankings
  • Planinsek finished last season as the second-highest ranked freshman in the country, concluding the year at No. 27
  • Additionally, Planinsek was the only freshman from the Southeastern Conference to be ranked in singles
  • Planinsek was named the SEC Freshman of the Year and was selected for Second Team All-SEC and SEC All-Freshman Team honors
  • Samofalov concluded the year with 12 singles wins
  • Samofalov, along with partner Planinsek, held a season-high ranking of 28th in doubles and finished the year ranked 53rd
  • He capped the season with 15 doubles wins

ITA All-American Championships

  • The tournament features over 250 of the best singles players in the country competing in a single elimination bracket
  • Additionally, 64 of the best doubles pairings will battle over the weeklong competition
  • Singles matches will be best two out of three sets with no-ad scoring
  • Pre-qualifying and qualifying doubles will play an eight game pro set with no-ad scoring, tiebreak at seven games all, while the main draw will play two sets with a 10-point match tiebreak in lieu of a third set with no-ad scoring
