Alabama Men’s Tennis Captures Six Wins On Day One Of Tusca Bama Cup Tournament


TUSCALOOSA, Ala.– Alabama men’s tennis team opened competition at the Tusca Bama Cup Tournament on Saturday at the Alabama Tennis Stadium.

Rounds 16 Results 

 A Crimson

  • Filip Planinsek gave the Tide its first win of the day over Clayton Anderson with a 7-5, 6-1 victory
  • Matias Ponce De Leon was victorious over Chetanna Amadike in his opening match Saturday
  • Ponce De Leon took the first set 6-0 but fell 6-4 in the second set
  • The UA freshman fought back and came out on top, winning 10-3 in the tiebreak

A White

 Quarterfinals

A Crimson

  • Matias Ponce De Leon beat Roberto Ferrer Guimaraes in straight sets, 6-1, 7-5, in his second match of the day
  • Filip Planinsek defeated Roman Poštolka of UAB 6-3 in the first set
  • Planinsek closed out the match, winning a second-set battle 7-6(11)
  • Ponce De Leon and Planinsek will both compete in the semifinal round Sunday at 10:45 a.m. CT

  • German Samofalov competed against Mississippi State’s Benito Sanchez Martinez, where he came out on top 7-5, 6-2
  • Samofalov will play in the semifinal round at 9 a.m. CT Sunday
