Alabama Finds Success on Opening Day of Big 12/SEC Challenge


STILLWATER, Okla. –– Roan Jones and Matias Ponce De Leon paced Alabama on the opening day of the Big 12/SEC Challenge as the Crimson Tide recorded three singles wins and a doubles victory at the Greenwood Tennis Center in Stillwater, Okla.

Jones and Ponce De Leon secured a come-from-behind three-set win in doubles to open the day. In singles, both doubles partners along with Zach Foster won their matchups in straight sets as the Crimson Tide took three of four singles matches.

The Competition

  • After dropping the opening set 6-3, Jones and Ponce De Leon fought their way back into the match against Baylor’s Louis Bowden and Marko Miladinovic with a 6-4 second-set victory
  • In a back-and-forth third-set tiebreaker, Jones and Ponce De Leon rallied to move ahead and secure the match at 10-8
  • In singles, Foster topped Alessio Basile (OSU) in two sets, 6-3, 7-5
  • Jones defeated the Cowboys’ Carl Roothman 6-1, 7-5
  • In a long, hard-fought matchup, Ponce De Leon took the opening set against Erik Schiessle (OSU) 7-5 before winning a second-set tiebreaker at 9-7 for the overall victory
