Alabama Athletics Student-Athletes Take Part in SEC Leadership Council Meetings

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – A total of five Alabama student-athletes were among those representing all 14 SEC schools who recently participated in a meeting of the SEC Student-Athlete Leadership Council at the league offices in Birmingham, Ala.

Hannah Barber (women’s basketball), Adam Cottrell (men’s basketball), Jace Jones (track & field/cross country), Jalen Milroe (football) and Sydney Orefice (women’s tennis) represented the Crimson Tide’s Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC), Football Leadership Council and Men’s and Women’s Basketball Leadership Council.

“Attending the SEC Student-Athlete Leadership Council was an amazing opportunity,” Milore said. “I am grateful I had the chance to meet other SEC student-athletes and share ideas to improve our experiences. Knowing that we all play different sports but face the same challenges was eye-opening. After this experience, I truly understand we are ‘More than Students, More than Athletes’.”

During the two-day meeting, the Council heard a leadership presentation from Clay Scroggins and participated in a mental health discussion with Nafis Ricks. The student-athletes were also updated on the NCAA Division I Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) and discussed SAAC programming on SEC campuses.

“The opportunity to learn and grow with student-athletes from all sports across our conference is one I am extremely grateful for,” Barber said. “The SEC continues to set the standard by their dedication to valuing the voices and experiences of its student-athletes.”

The agenda also included a conversation with SEC Commissioner Greg Sankey and updates on the SEC Council on Racial Equity and Social Justice and SEC and NCAA legislative items.

Student-Athlete Leadership Councils were introduced in 2016 for the sports of?football and men’s and women’s basketball, which, in addition to SAAC, provide student-athletes with additional opportunities to engage with campus leaders and conference office staff. The councils serve as a conduit of communication to the conference office on issues related to student-athlete experience and student-athlete wellness.
