Coco Gauff didn’t get the result she wanted against fellow American Amanda Anisimova on Centre Court on Saturday. The 18-year-old failed to reach the second week at Wimbledon for the first time as she fell to Anisimova, 6-7(4), 6-2, 6-1.
Gauff, who advanced in the mixed doubles draw with Jack Sock later in the day, told reporters that she should watch out for 20-year-old Anisimova.
Why? Because she’s lethal on the grass.
“She’s obviously a great player,” Gauff said. “I mean, she’s not an easy player to play, especially on this surface. “I think grass, she can do a lot of damage on. She’s obviously good on clay, but I think grass is a good surface for her, especially the way she hits the ball, it’s pretty flat. It’s tough. Today was kind of windy so it was tough to time the ball for me.”
How far can Anisimova, who faces Harmony Tan in the round of 16, go? Why not the final, says Gauff.
“I think she has got a good shot of pretty much going all the way to the final,” she said. “If she plays like she did those last two sets against me, I think that’s some top-notch tennis right there.”
