CHAMPAIGN, Ill. – No. 52 Jonas Ziverts fell to No. 6 August Holmgren (USD) in round two of the NCAA Singles Championships.
Holmgren bested Ziverts in straight sets. Set one saw Holmgren take the lead before Ziverts tied it 3-3 then was up 4-3 before the No. 6 seed tied it back to 4-4 and eventually won the set 6-4.
Ziverts stumbled in the second set, winning only one game of it that ended in a 6-1 win for Holmgren. This marks Ziverts’ second overall appearance in the individual tournament and his first appearance in the round of 32.
He claimed his first win ever at the Singles Championships after he defeated No. 101 Christopher Bulus 2-6, 6-1, 6-4 to advance to round two.
Ziverts and Gustaf Strom, who fell to No. 12 Luc Fomba in round one, held down the top two singles spots during the regular and post-season. They were crucial in historic victories throughout the season.
Ending his season 14-8 overall, Strom took down three ranked players between Texas, Baylor and Stanford. All at No. 2 singles, he defeated No. 26 Micah Braswell (Texas), No. 36 Matias Soto (Baylor) and No. 112 Axel Geller (Stanford). Strom was one of two Wildcats to win their singles matches in the losses against Virginia Commonwealth and Baylor.
Ziverts ends his season with an overall singles record of 12-18 and seven ranked singles wins. He defeated five ranked players in the regular season that was all Arizona wins, No. 69 Eliot Spizzirri (Texas), No. 6 Holmgren (who was ranked No. 1 at the time Ziverts defeated him), No. 37 Mason Beiler (OU), No. 56 Peter Makk (USC) and No. 15 Arthur Fery from Stanford who was ranked No. 2 when defeated by Ziverts.
His last two ranked singles wins were in the post-season. Ziverts defeated No. 55 Ryan Seggerman in round one of the NCAA Team Championships and then No. 101 Christopher Bulus in round one of the Singles Championships.
This wasn’t the first time that Arizona participated in the team and individual tournament, and it certainly won’t be the last.
