Blue Devils Drop Tight One on Senior Day to No. 4 Virginia, 4-3

DURHAM – In a top-20 battle at Ambler Tennis Stadium on Sunday, the 20th-ranked Duke women’s tennis team dropped a nail-biter, 4-3, to fourth-ranked Virginia on senior day.
 
The Blue Devils fell to 13-7 overall, 6-5 in the ACC, while the Cavaliers improved to 18-3 overall and 10-1 in the ACC.  Prior to the match, Duke honored Karolina Berankova, Iuliia Bryzgalova and Brianna Shvets for senior day. 
 
How It Happened

  • In doubles action, the Cavaliers went ahead early by winning courts one and two to take a 1-0 lead.
  • Shavit Kimchi and Katie Codd jumped out to a 2-0 lead on court one against the 12th-ranked Virginia duo of Melodie Collard and Elaine Chervinsky. The Cavalier tandem fought back to even the score at 3-3. Collard and Chervinsky would go on to take the match, 6-4.
  • On court three, the graduate student tandem of Iuliia Bryzgalova and Brianna Shvets evened the score, 1-1, after besting Sara Ziodato and Annabelle Xu, 6-3. The Duke duo led early, 3-1. Ziodato and Xu evened the score, 3-3, but ultimately fell in the contest as Shvets and Bryzgalova won three straight games.
  • The doubles point was clinched on court two as the 31st-ranked Virginia pair of Natasha Subhash and Hibah Shaikh totaled a 7-5 win over Emma Jackson .
  • Duke had a solid start in singles, winning four-out-of-six of its first sets.
