Wildcats Fall to Stanford in 4-3 Battle


TUCSON – No. 7 Arizona fell to No. 33 Stanford on Saturday, 3-4. The loss is the first in conference play for the Wildcats (17-3, 3-1 Pac-12) this season.

Stanford (12-4, 4-0 Pac-12) took the doubles point, getting wins on courts one and three to take an early lead in the team score. Samir Banerjee and Nishesh Basavareddy defeated 24th-ranked Colton Smith and Jay Friend, 6-1, but the Cats evened things up with Herman Hoeyeraal and Eric Padgham’s 6-4 takedown of Aryan Chaudhary and Harsh Hemming Parish.

The Cardinal claimed the team point with Kyle Kang and Neil Rajesh’s 6-2 win over Alexander Rozin and Gustaf Strom on court three.

Arizona won three first sets in singles, but Stanford was able to post a singles win first with Kang’s 6-3, 6-2 win over No. 97 Hoeyeraal. Casper Christensen got Arizona’s first point of the match, cruising to w 6-1, 6-2 defeat of Hudson Rivera.

No. 89 Rajesh put the Cardinal one away from clinching with a 6-4, 6-4 win over Nick Lagaev, but No. 26 Friend gutted out a 6-2, 3-6, 6-4 win over No. 51 Banerjee to bring Arizona within one. 

No. 80 Strom tied the team score at three apiece with a marathon match, defeating Max Basing 6-4, 2-6, 6-2. 

The match came down to court one, where No. 14 Smith was locked into a three-set battle with No. 23 Basavareddy. Ultimately, Basavareddy claimed victory with a 7-6(10), 2-6, 6-3 win over Smith.

Arizona is back in action Sunday, April 7 at 1:00 p.m. MST as they take on No. 17 Arizona State at the LaNelle Robson Tennis Center.
